«Reporters without borders»: in 2024, 54 journalists were killed in the world, more than half — in conflict zones

This year, 54 journalists were killed in the world, 31 — in zones of military conflicts. This is stated in the Reporters Without Borders report.
The most dangerous countries were Iraq, Sudan, Myanmar, Ukraine and Gaza, where the number of media workers killed reached a five-year high, amounting to 57.4%.

At the same time, according to IMI, since the beginning of the full-scale war in the Russian Federation, 91 journalists have been killed, and 329 media have stopped their work.
Director General of RSF Thibaut Brutten dedicated this report to Ukrainian journalist Viktoria Roshchyna. It became known about her death in Russian captivity on October 10 of this year.
It is noted that until the publication of the report, the Russian authorities did not provide any explanations regarding the circumstances of the journalist's death and did not return her body.
«Informing is not a crime, but killing someone to silence them is,» he said.
In 2024, 550 media workers were detained in the world, in particular in Russia (+8) and Israel (+17). China, Myanmar, Israel and Belarus are the countries where the most journalists are detained.

To protect those who inform us is to protect the truth,» Thibaut Brutten is confident.
