The Security Service of Ukraine announced suspicion against Colonel-General of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Oleh Makarevych for ordering to blow up the dam at the Kakhovskaya HPP on the night of June 6, 2023.
This was reported to the SSU.
According to the investigation, the suspect coordinated the units subordinate to him, in particular the engineering and sapper service and the 205th separate motorized rifle brigade, in order to prepare for the destruction of the dam. At the same time, he could not fail to realize that the dam is a civilian object, and its destruction will lead to serious consequences for the civilian population, law enforcement officials say.
According to the SSU materials, Oleh Makarevych was informed of the suspicion under Part 2 of Article 28, Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — a violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with intentional murder, committed by a group of persons based on a prior conspiracy. He faces life imprisonment.
As a result of the destruction of the hydroelectric power station, the objects of critical infrastructure were completely destroyed, which led to the death of at least 35 people, the flooding of 46 settlements in the Kherson region, and the flooding of 20 settlements in the Mykolaiv region.
Earlier, the mayor of Nova Kakhovka, Volodymyr Kovalenko, said that due to Russians undermining the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant, the left bank of the Dnieper will become a «zone without life» in 3-5 years.
It should be noted that exactly one year ago, on June 6, Russian troops blew up the Kakhovka HPP. Volodymyr Kovalenko notes that as of today, on the left bank of the Dnipro, groundwater has fallen by more than 10 meters. In addition, the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station caused changes in the microclimate of the region.
