The Department of Architecture of the City Council is working on the development of a catalog of city objects for the installation of the «Mykolaiv — City on the Wave» logo. These are individual transport stops, urban furniture and playgrounds.
At the same time, the replacement of these objects will be carried out after the end of the war, the chief architect of Mykolaiv, Yevhen Poliakov, said in a comment to NikVesti.
Currently, the city has already developed a branded catalog of public transport stops, and will continue to work on a catalog of city furniture and playgrounds. The Department's employees are working on the design outside of working hours without using any funds, the chief architect added.
«We have now developed a catalog of public transport stops for peacetime, so that they are modern for a modern city using city symbols. It can be urban furniture, which is also branded. In addition to public transport stops, I plan to develop a catalog for urban furniture. These are benches and bins, parklets for public spaces and playgrounds. Because when the question arises, which playgrounds should be in the city, then definitely not the ones that exist now,» Yevhen Poliakov shared.
He also explained that the catalog will contain detailed information about the appearance of city objects and their characteristics.
«These are designs with drawings, characteristics, what sizes, what elements, how it should look and what it should be made of. We are now in a state of war, but it is possible to make some decisions about what to do in peacetime. So that later you don't do what you're used to, but do something modern. I understand it as follows: when the situation allows, such works are carried out. They should not be in the style of the 2000s, but should be modern. Therefore, it is necessary to accept the corresponding catalogs. It is not possible to talk about only two typical stops, the elements must be formed according to needs. For example, there is not enough space to install the structure, or vice versa — there is too much of it. There are combined stops, there are places where electric transport workers are located within the stop to serve drivers and passengers,» explained the chief architect of the city.
The logo of Mykolaiv is a city on the wave. Where did he come from?
The city's brand — the logo «Mykolaiv — a city on the wave» was presented back in 2019. It became a gift of the «Dream Action» platform for the 230th anniversary of Mykolaiv. Then they said that this logo would become the official brand of the city and promote it to the masses.
In December 2020, the deputies of the city council approved the regulations regarding the tourist logo of the city «Mykolaiv — a city on the wave». Since then, the new logo can be used to attract tourists, at official events and in official documents.
After that, the brand began to appear at new public transport stops and communal transport ( trolley buses and trams).
During the full-scale invasion of Mykolaiv, work on the development of the City Development Strategy also began. They offered two visions of community development. One of which is fully aimed at positioning Mykolaiv as a city on the wave.
«These waves were concretized. It will be a safe city, comfortable, competitive and a city that develops partnerships. That is, this is a city in the center of which is a person and partnership relations: between people, the government, the community and business,» said UNDP strategic planning expert Olena Nyzhnyk.
And what about changing the coat of arms of Mykolaiv?
In September 2023, the mayor of Mykolaiv announced the change of the current coat of arms. Oleksandr Sienkevych explained this by the fact that on the image of the city's coat of arms there is a galley with oars — a symbol of slave ideology, which must be eliminated during Ukraine's struggle for freedom from Russia:
«The thing is that it shows a galley with oars. Without sails. I think you all understand what such a galley means, who worked on it to death. We are not rowing slaves, not slaves. We absolutely do not need such symbols in the identity of our city!» the mayor said at the time.
The head of Mykolaiv RMA Vitalii Kim and People's Deputy Oleksandr Haidu agreed to finance the competition for the new coat of arms of Mykolaiv. They announced that they would allocate 200,000 hryvnias of personal funds for this.
This idea was also supported by the secretary of the Mykolaiv City Council, Dmytro Falko. In his opinion, the new coat of arms will be more modern and take into account the recent history of Mykolaiv.
The Department of Culture of the Mykolaiv City Council is currently working on the development of regulations for holding a contest to change the city's coat of arms.
