As of the end of 2024, the population of Mykolaiv has increased by 63,000 people compared to last year.

Such data are given in the draft budget of the Mykolaiv City Council for 2025, NikVesti reports.

As you know, as of February 1, 2022, the population of the city, according to estimates, was 469 thousand 545 people. In 2023, the mayor of Mykolaiv Oleksandr Sienkovych stated that about 350-360 thousand people live in Mykolaiv, of which about 56 thousand are internally displaced persons.

However, according to mobile operators, as of February 1, 2024, this number increased to 423,225 people.

In general, during the full-scale war, the population of Mykolaiv decreased by more than 46 thousand people. The main reason for this was the forced migration of citizens due to the security situation, when part of the city's residents moved to safer regions of Ukraine or abroad.

The draft budget emphasizes that demographic development and the situation on the labor market in Mykolaiv will remain dependent on the security situation. In 2025, population figures are expected to remain at the level of 2024.

How did the population level change in Mykolaiv?

As you know, since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, about 45% of the townspeople have left Mykolaiv. The statistics began to change positively only after the deoccupation of the right bank of the Kherson region. And already in September 2023, about 350-360 thousand people lived in Mykolaiv. This was the same indicator compared to May of the same year. At the same time, 56,000 of that number are internally displaced persons.

At the same time, in May, the head of Mykolaiv region Vitalii Kim reported that about 80% of the pre-war population lives in Mykolaiv region, but there are far fewer jobs.

Currently, more than 167,000 internally displaced persons are registered in the Mykolaiv region, of which more than 48,000 live directly in Mykolaiv.

Despite the positive dynamics in terms of the population, Mykolaiv remains among the cities with the lowest indicators of income and budget expenditures per inhabitant in Ukraine. In particular, budget revenues per city resident amount to only 8.8 thousand hryvnias, and expenses — 7.5 thousand hryvnias.

Reorganization of maternity hospitals in Mykolaiv

As you know, in May 2023 in Mykolaiv, the city authorities began to study the issue of unification of maternity hospitals, due to the reduction in the number of births.

On July 31, 2023, the Mykolaiv City Council made a decision to reorganize maternity homes №1 and №2 — they were attached to City Hospital №1 and City Hospital №3, respectively. The head of the city's health care department, Iryna Shamrai, explaining the need to reorganize medical facilities, stated that over the past 7 years, the number of pregnant women in Mykolaiv has decreased 5 times.

The city authorities plan to keep one maternity hospital in the city for almost half a million residents — №3, which is located in the Lisky microdistrict in the Factory district of Mykolaiv.

The possibility of reducing schools in Mykolaiv

As of the end of June 2024, an outflow of students took place in Mykolaiv. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the student contingent has decreased by 13.8% to 6,380 people.

According to First Vice Mayor Anatoly Petrov, because of this, there is a risk of closing more schools than expected after the completion of the process of reorganization of the city's educational institutions. Since there are enough students for approximately 40-42 schools, and there are actually 68 of them.
