Sienkevych has instructed that outdoor cultural and sporting events be stepped up: «The city must thrive»

Mykolaiv plans to step up cultural, sporting and educational events in open-air city venues to revitalise community life and create more leisure opportunities for residents.

This was announced by Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych during a staff meeting on 11 May, according to NikVesti.

According to the mayor, the departments of culture, education and sport are to organise the systematic work of their teams in the city’s open-air venues throughout the spring and summer.

«So that we can begin the process of revitalising the city. What does this mean in practice? The departments of culture, education and sport must organise the systematic work of their teams throughout the spring and summer so that people can work in open urban spaces,» noted Oleksandr Sienkevych.

The mayor emphasised that today Mykolaiv’s population remains roughly at pre-war levels, partly due to internally displaced persons, and it is important to create a comfortable environment for them.

According to him, the city should be perceived not merely as a temporary refuge, but as a place to live, raise children and relax.

«It is important that they see that this is not just a shelter, but a city where they can relax and raise their children,» he said.

According to the mayor, even under martial law, the city must remain a vibrant public space.

«Of course, first and foremost, this is a matter of security, but we must also have youth, sporting and educational events. The city must remain vibrant,» concluded Oleksandr Sienkevych.

It was also reported that the Mykolaiv Department of Housing and Communal Services has seen a reduction in funding and the number of projects implemented.

It should be noted that the reconstruction of residential buildings damaged by shelling will remain a key priority for the Mykolaiv Department of Housing and Communal Services in 2026.

Ihor Nabatov, First Deputy Director of the Department of Housing and Communal Services of the Mykolaiv City Council, also reported that the war has significantly complicated the work of the Mykolaiv Department of Housing and Communal Services and the Capital Construction Department, as the number of facilities requiring maintenance is growing without a corresponding increase in funding or staff.

Currently, the City Council’s Department of Housing and Communal Services expects that, following the development of project documentation for the energy modernisation of 10 apartment blocks under the FELICITY II project, the construction work will be funded by the European Investment Bank.
