In the Mykolaiv region, transport fares have risen by almost 40%: what else has gone up in price in May

In the Mykolaiv region, public transport fares jumped by almost 40% in May, whilst the price of eggs fell by 23%.

This is according to data from the regional statistics office, NikVesti reports.

Overall, consumer prices in the Mykolaiv region rose by 1.6% in May this year compared to April. This continued the trend of steady price increases observed since the beginning of spring. On an annual basis, inflation reached 9.3%, and compared to December last year, prices rose by 7.7%.

The biggest price hike in May was for public transport fares — a jump of 39.2%. Prices for buckwheat also rose significantly, by 18.7%, and fruit by almost 15%, whilst bread rose in price by 5.5%, the highest increase in the past year. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco products also became 3.5% more expensive.

Furthermore, cleaning and waste collection services became almost 9% more expensive.

At the same time, some products became cheaper. In particular, eggs fell by 23.2%. Prices also fell for vegetables (-4.9%), clothing and footwear (-2.6%) and rice (-1.8%).

Prices for medicines remained almost unchanged in May, falling by just 0.4%. Milk became 0.3% cheaper, continuing the trend seen in April. The cost of meat and meat products has been rising at the same rate for the second month in a row — by 2.1%.

Another trend in May was a slowdown in the rise of fuel prices. While in March and April the cost of fuel rose by 11.6% and 7.6% respectively, in May the increase was only 1.4%.

As a reminder, prices in the Mykolaiv region continued to rise in April this year. Consumer prices rose by almost 2% over the month, whilst annual inflation stood at over 9%.
