The 96th Academy Awards ceremony was held in Los Angeles. For the first time in history, the award went to a Ukrainian film.

The broadcast in Ukraine was carried out by the TV channel Suspilne Kultura.

Mstyslav Chernov's «20 Days in Mariupol» won in the «Best Feature Documentary» category.

The film «20 days in Mariupol» tells the story of the Russian attack on the city on February 24, 2022, and through the camera of war correspondent Mstyslav Chernov shows evidence of 20 days of future events: the bombing of houses and a maternity hospital, the life of people in a besieged city, etc.

«I wish I had never made this film. If I could exchange the award for the fact that Russia never attacked Ukraine, did not occupy our cities, did not kill tens of thousands of my Ukrainian compatriots,» Mstyslav Chernov commented on the victory.

List of Oscar winners:

  • The best film is «Oppenheimer»;
  • Best Actor — Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer.
  • Best Actress - Emma Stone, «Poor Creatures».
  • The best director (or director) — «Oppenheimer», Christopher Nolan;
  • The best documentary film is «20 days in Mariupol».

We will remind you that Mstyslav Chernov's tape «20 Days in Mariupol» also won the «Best Documentary Film» nomination of the BAFTA award.

Also, two documentaries about the war in Ukraine — «From Where to» by Macek Hamel and «20 Days in Mariupol» by Mstyslav Chernov — won awards at the Sheffield DocFest 2023 festival in Great Britain.
