On Wednesday, 19 February, the European Union agreed on a new package of sanctions against Russia. This is the 16th package of sanctions since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.

This was reported by Rickard Jozwiak, editor of «Radio Liberty», on social network X.

«The EU has just agreed on a new package of sanctions against Russia. The 16th since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago. It will be officially adopted by the foreign ministers of European countries on Monday»,  wrote Rikard Jozwiak.

The head of the Presidential Office, Andrii Yermak, also commented on the approval of the sanctions.

«The news that there will be a 16th package of sanctions against Russia is good. I know that a number of our proposals have been taken into account. We need to prepare the 17th. I believe that sanctions are one of the key mechanisms to curb Russia's desire to kill more», he said.

According to the Financial Times, the 16th package of EU sanctions against Russia targets the aluminium industry and further tightens restrictions on its oil exports.

«The sanctions target 13 banks, 73 so-called shadow fleet tankers used by the Kremlin to export crude oil, and a «phased» ban on EU countries buying certain types of Russian aluminium products», the newspaper writes.

As a reminder, US President Donald Trump is ready to significantly strengthen sanctions against Russia, even doubling them, to force Moscow to end its war against Ukraine.
