The EU, or European Union, is a political and economic union of 27 European states.

Ukraine is negotiating EU membership: in October 2026 all member states agreed to open two more negotiating clusters. The EU supports Ukraine with Ukraine Facility tranches and a €90 billion loan, which the EU expects to cover about two thirds of the country’s budget and defence needs in 2026–2027. In October 2026 the EU adopted almost 1,600 new sanctions on Russia’s military industry.
