The Latvian authorities have ordered the first Russians whose permits have expired to leave the country.

The Migration Agency in Riga reports that six Russian citizens have already received eviction notices. Two of them have already left the country, the head of the department Myra Rose said. The remaining four must do so within 30 days.

We would like to remind you that Latvian migration legislation was amended in autumn 2022 due to Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

Now, anyone who wants to live legally in Latvia with a Russian passport must apply for permanent resident status and, with rare exceptions, prove their knowledge of the Latvian language, suitable for everyday use, in a language test.

Now, persons who have not submitted the relevant documents and have not received a residence permit in Latvia must leave the country.

According to the Latvian Migration Service, about a thousand Russians live in the country today, but half of them have already left the Baltic country across the border with other European countries.

It was previously reported that Latvia granted asylum to a citizen of the Russian Federation, who declared that he fought on the side of Ukraine in 2014. The man applied for refugee status or alternative status in 2022, explaining that his life, health and freedom are in danger in the country of his citizenship, i.e. Russia.
