In Mykolaiv, it is planned to rename 40 streets in honor of fallen soldiers

In Mykolaiv, the toponymy commission proposed, as part of the decommunization process, to rename 40 streets with the names of those who died in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Oleksandr Tryhub, the head of the street renaming commission, announced this in an interview on the MART TV channel, NikVesti reports.

There are currently about 1,200 toponyms in the city of Mykolaiv, but only 25% of them have been considered for renaming. During the work of the commission, many applications were received from military units, public organizations and the mothers' union with proposals to rename streets in honor of the fallen heroes. According to Oleksandr Tryhub, the process of choosing surnames for renaming streets was difficult, since the war continues and the number of fallen heroes is constantly increasing.

«Initially, a list of 25 fallen residents of Mykolaiv was proposed. But while the commission was working, other names appeared. For example, it was proposed to name the street in honor of the Mudryk brothers, who died while performing combat missions in the east and south of Ukraine. We have immortalized about 40 heroes, including aviators and attack aircraft,» Oleksandr Tryhub noted.

The commission also considered the possibility of naming streets in honor of fallen soldiers at their place of residence. However, there were difficulties due to the fact that not all streets were included in the list for renaming, and sometimes several heroes could live on the same street.

«There was a proposal to name the fallen soldiers where they lived, but due to the fact that sometimes the street was not renamed, or it happened that there were several heroes who lived on the same street. This is a very difficult question, because many streets are not in the center, and some are not even paved. On the one hand, activists begin to accuse the commission that we call quality third-rate streets in honor of heroes, and do not touch central streets. This is not the case, because there are practically no streets in the center that are subject to renaming,» noted Oleksandr Tryhub.

The head of the commission added that in addition to renaming the streets in honor of the fallen soldiers, there is a possibility of perpetuating the feat through memorial plaques near the houses where the soldiers lived.

«We went to meet the community, but not only through streets, the only way to immortalize the feat is also memorial boards. If the public demands, they can in the future, regardless of the toponymic commission, and with a request to the deputy corps, rename neutral streets in honor of one or another person, as was done in the Soviet Union, which we criticize so much,» Oleksandr Tryhub summarized.

As you know, in April the Mykolaiv City Council adopted a new regulation regarding the renaming of toponyms — the authorities plan to get rid of all Russian names in the city.

Also, the deputy commission on legality approved a new version of the regulation on the activities of the commission on toponymy, which was engaged in street renaming.

In particular, Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych reported that there was a commission on toponymy in the city, which was engaged in street renaming, but as of today, its composition needs to be updated.

However, in August it became known that the toponymic commission has not yet started working. Due to the withdrawal of one of the candidates, the deputies of the city council will have to update the composition of the commission.

We will also remind you that Major General Dmytro Marchenko, who led the defense of Mykolaiv at the beginning of the full-scale war, opposed the renaming of one of the city's streets after him.

Previously, according to the interim results of a survey within the project «Decolonization: rethinking the imperial past in the public space of Mykolaiv», the name of Dmytro Marchenko became one of those in whose honor Mykolaiv residents propose to rename the streets of the city. The offer was submitted by 32 respondents.

In September, deputies of the Mykolaiv City Council approved the new composition of the toponymic commission. Major General Dmytro Marchenko was included in it, but with the note «by agreement».
