The UNDP delegation inspected the dismantling of the destroyed Sukhomlynskyi University building in Mykolaiv: the work is promised to be completed in two weeks

On Wednesday, September 11, Shoko Noda, director of the Bureau of Crisis Situations of UNDP, arrived in Mykolaiv on a working visit. Together with representatives of the city authorities, she inspected the work on the demolition of the rubble of the destroyed building of the pedagogical university.

This was reported by the correspondent of NikVesti.

The organization began dismantling building №2, which was destroyed by a missile strike in the summer of 2022.

According to the examination, part of the building was recognized as emergency. As of the beginning of September, the builders have already completed more than 65% of the dismantling works. Completion is planned in two weeks, said Oleksii Pechenyi, engineering analyst of UNDP in Ukraine.

«Sukhomlynskyi University is the first facility where we started dismantling. From an engineering point of view, it is more difficult than buildings in other regions because it is a partial demolition. It is necessary to understand that part of the building must remain in place and must not collapse after our work. Therefore, cutting pipes, handling large reinforced concrete structures, and the removal of garbage itself are technical difficulties. But everything is going according to plan. Work will continue for about two weeks,» says Oleksii Pechenyi.

Shoko Noda, director of the Bureau of Crisis Situations of UNDP, watched the work of the builders. The official said that the purpose of her visit is to personally see how the UNDP team works in Ukraine.

«I came from New York to personally see how my team works here. I am very proud of their work. The team in Mykolaiv Oblast faced the fact that it had started the reconstruction process even during the protracted hostilities. But the biggest challenge for Mykolaiv is not only reconstruction, it is a new economic vision for this region. Together with the authorities, we are working on building a new economic model,» Shoko Noda said.

She also emphasized that the organization is actively engaged not only in dismantling damaged buildings, but also in sorting and processing construction waste.

«We pay considerable attention to the recycling of construction waste. We sort materials into those that can be recycled and those that must be disposed of. We supported the creation of the first recycling center in the Kyiv region. The recycling program, I believe, is the first stage in the recovery of Ukraine,» added the director of the Bureau of Crisis Situations of UNDP.

So far, 20% of work on sorting and removal of construction waste from the university territory has been completed.
