There are plans to turn a historic building in the centre of Mykolaiv — an architectural landmark known as «Yuritsyn House», where restoration work is currently underway — into a hotel.

This was announced by Yurii Liubarov, head of the Mykolaiv Department of Culture, during a live broadcast on Facebook, in response to a question from a journalist from NikVesti.

According to him, the issue regarding «Yuritsyn House» has been under consideration for many years, and several projects have been proposed during this time.

«This latest project was supported subject to comments. I would like to note that relevant comments were provided, and I hope they were taken into account during the project’s refinement. Yes, indeed, this is a restoration with adaptation. There is such a type of work — restoration with adaptation. It used to be a residential building, then an office building where design organisations worked. Now, as far as we were aware from the project under discussion, a hotel is planned there,» said Yurii Liubarov.

He added that in the event of any violations, he would contact the cultural heritage department to ascertain whether they had been recorded.

«There are things that the new balance-holder or owner of this building can do within the law, and there are things they cannot do because they contravene the law. This was also highlighted during the discussion of the projects,» noted the official.

Yurii Liubarov declined to comment on his personal views regarding the reconstruction project.

«You will be able to contact me or the security department directly in due course to find out my position. My personal stance as a public official is a matter limited by my powers. There is the position and there is the person. Whilst I hold this position, I will only answer those questions which the law permits me to answer and which I am obliged to comment on,» said Yurii Liubarov.

In a comment to NikVesti, Svitlana Hladun, head of the cultural heritage department at the Mykolaiv Culture Department, stated that the building’s restoration involves adapting it to modern needs by fitting out office spaces.

«The owner has committed to using it as a public institution or a residential building. At present, it has not been definitively decided what exactly will be there. The project involves adapting the building to modern needs by fitting out office spaces for a public administrative institution,» explained Svitlana Hladun.

She added that the department is currently unaware of any possible changes to the project. According to her, work is being carried out inside the building. During the routine inspection on 5 March, no issues were identified in accordance with the project.

«The work is being carried out in accordance with the approved project. We visited the site together with the architect and the contractor. The owner has not made any additional requests for changes. As for whether there will be a hotel or a business centre there — I cannot say at this stage,» noted Svitlana Hladun.

As is known, work began a year ago in Mykolaiv on the restoration of a historic 19th-century building — an architectural monument known as «Yuritsyn House». The area around the estate was fenced off, and the builders, in particular, knocked down part of the decorative mouldings on the façade, as it turned out, even before obtaining a permit for the work. The building in question is a two-storey house located at 40/1 Vadym Blahovisnyi (Nikolska) Street, at the junction with Oleksii Vadatursky (Falieievska) Street. The building belongs to a private owner — it was purchased by Iryna Herasymenko in 2023.

«Yuritsyn House» is a two-storey mansion built in the second half of the 19th century in an eclectic style, renowned for its decorative stucco work. The building holds the status of a monument of local architectural significance. Serhii Yuritsyn himself was a Mykolaiv-based journalist, publisher and political figure. After the establishment of Soviet power in Mykolaiv in March 1919, he left the city, but returned in June of the same year with Denikin’s troops and resumed his post as city commissar. In February 1920, when the Bolsheviks finally occupied Mykolaiv, Yuritsyn left the city and, according to available information, never returned either to Mykolaiv or to his home.

Last December, the building’s owner carried out work there to create a parking bay, which resulted in damage to the roots of several trees. One of them fell a few days later.
