In Mykolaiv, a storm drain on Industrialna Street, which had not been maintained for around 40 years, is being cleared. It was 90% blocked, and utility workers have already removed over 620 m³ of sludge.

This was reported by Vitalii Shevchenko, director of the municipal enterprise ELU Avtodorig, during a live broadcast, according to NikVesti.

According to him, this concerns collector №13, which runs along Industrialna Street. The total length of the network is over 2.5 km. So far, utility workers have already cleared more than 0.5 km.

«This sewer was built around 40 years ago and since then it has never been opened or thoroughly cleaned, as we are doing now. The work involves fully opening the sewer and gradually clearing it of sludge and dirt,» said Vitalii Shevchenko.

He explained that the work is being carried out in stages: first, the cover slabs are removed, after which machinery enters the sewer and removes the accumulated silt. Where necessary, individual sections of the structure are repaired, and then the structure is closed again.

«We open the slabs, an excavator drives in and clears out the silt. If necessary, we repair individual sections of the structure, after which we close the sewer. It was about 90% blocked, so in fact it hadn’t been working for several years,» he noted.

According to the company director, once work began, it became apparent that the system was gradually regaining its capacity.

«This year we are working on stormwater systems, but no major or large-scale ongoing repairs to the networks are planned. The priority is maintaining the fourth collector in the «Dormashyna» area, which we constantly clear so that during heavy downpours it can handle as much water flow as possible,» added Vitalii Shevchenko.

It is worth recalling that last year, municipal workers cleared around 108 tonnes of rubbish from the stormwater collector on Tsentralnyi Avenue in the Dormashyna district. This location remains one of the most problematic in the city — the collector becomes blocked more frequently than any other.
