Moldova is a country in Eastern Europe that borders Ukraine, including Odesa Oblast. In the east of the country lies unrecognised Transnistria, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that new threats to Ukraine could come from there. Technically, Moldova's power grid is part of the Ukrainian energy system, so outages in Ukraine are felt there too.

The war increasingly spills over into Moldova: since the start of 2026 its airspace has seen 39 unauthorised drone flights, Russian drones have exploded on Moldovan territory, and in September 2026 a strike on the Starokozache checkpoint on the border with Odesa Oblast killed two people. In October 2026 Moldova proposed moving Ukrainian checkpoints onto its own territory.
