Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s army as of July 2026

Oleksandr Syrskyi is a Ukrainian general who, as of July 2026, led the Armed Forces of Ukraine as Commander-in-Chief. He was born in 1965. On 8 February 2024 President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed him Commander-in-Chief in place of Valerii Zaluzhnyi; before that, from 2019, Syrskyi commanded the Ukrainian Ground Forces. At the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022 he led the defence of Kyiv and later the Kharkiv counteroffensive.

In July 2026 the media reported his possible dismissal, the General Staff denied it, and commanders of the Defence Forces publicly backed Syrskyi. At the same time Mykhailo Fedorov spoke about a conflict with him, and Syrskyi apologised.
