river in Ukraine

The Southern Bug is a river in Ukraine whose condition affects the water that reaches Mykolaiv. In July 2026 MykVisti and Horodok.City analysed the state of the river in Khmelnytskyi and Mykolaiv oblasts, in its upper and lower course.

Nearly ₴29 billion is to be spent by 2030 on a programme to restore the Southern Bug basin, with 17 main measures planned for Mykolaiv Oblast. In May 2026 MP Artem Chornomorov called for the Southern Bug Basin Water Resources Administration to be moved from Vinnytsia to Mykolaiv. Ecologists warn that expanding the Tashlyk pumped storage plant could harm the river's plants and wildlife.

MykVisti covers sewage pollution, poaching, illegal water extraction and the passage of vessels near the Varvarivskyi Bridge in Mykolaiv.
