Ukraine's ambassador to the UK, former army chief

Valerii Zaluzhnyi is a Ukrainian general and Hero of Ukraine who served as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from July 2021 to February 2024. He was born in 1973 in Novohrad-Volynskyi, Zhytomyr Oblast. On 8 February 2024 President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed him and appointed Oleksandr Syrskyi in his place, and in May that year Zaluzhnyi became Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom.

As of August 2026 he remains ambassador and tops the ranking of politicians Ukrainians trust most. In July 2026, according to Ukrainska Pravda, Zaluzhnyi confirmed he would run for president. In February 2026 he blamed Zelenskyy and officials for the failure of the 2023 counteroffensive.
