city in Donetsk Oblast, occupied since February 2024

Avdiivka is a city in Pokrovsk Raion of Donetsk Oblast and the centre of Avdiivka hromada. Russia has occupied the city since February 2024.

In the autumn and winter of 2023–2024 Russian troops stormed Avdiivka without pause, dropped aerial bombs on it and shelled the grounds of the coke plant. The 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade held the city for two years, and in February 2024 the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade was sent in as reinforcement. On the night of 17 February, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi ordered the troops to withdraw to avoid encirclement.

MykVisti covered the fighting for Avdiivka, the Ukrainian withdrawal and soldiers taken prisoner, the evacuation of residents and the Russian advance on nearby villages after the city fell.
