The Mykolaiv Alumina Plant supplies the city with about 1,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day, which it extracts from the Halytsynove deposit, free of charge.
Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych said this during the round table «Relaunching the Ukrainian subsoil: the first results of the implementation of the sanctions policy in the extractive sector», which was held on November 16 in Kyiv, writes NikVesti.
Commenting on the cancellation of the special permit for the extraction of drinking water for the Mykolaiv alumina plant, the mayor of Mykolaiv said that this could seriously affect the situation in the city, which has been left without a centralized drinking water supply since April 2022.
Oleksandr Sienkevych told how the Mykolaivvodokanal city utility company cooperates with MAP. According to the mayor, part of the water that the water company receives from the enterprise is distributed to the residents of Mykolaiv. Several food industry enterprises also use this water.
— The water that the people of Mykolaiv drink today is extracted from the ground. There are about 80 points of wells in Mykolaiv. How did the people of Mykolaiv live for a month without drinking water? We made a decision and analyzed that there are wells on the territory of the MAP enterprise, which the enterprise used as backup options. And Mykolayivvodokanal pumped purified Dnipro water into the enterprise. We used the pipeline used to pump water to the MAP in order to supply water from the MAP to the waterworks. In fact, today, MAP extracts this water with its own funds, pumps it into the pipeline, and we receive it from the clean water tank in the waterworks. Then this water is transported by cars around the city to places where citizens can get it for free. Also, this water is used by several enterprises, I will not name them, in order to manufacture food products in the city of Mykolaiv. Today, this water from this enterprise is given to Mykolaiv for free. This water is distributed in Mykolaiv. This is not 20% of all the water that Mykolaiv received or currently uses. Currently, this figure is about 100,000 cubic meters, and if we talk about the amount of water extracted by the MAP, then it is about 1,000 cubic meters per day. This applies precisely to the drinking water that we distribute to residents of Mykolaiv. This (cancellation of the permission of MAP, — note) will seriously affect us, the city of Mykolaiv, which has already suffered a lot, — Oleksandr Sienkevych said.
It was previously reported that the State Geology and Subsoil Service of Ukraine postponed until March 2024 the decision to suspend the special permit of the «Mykolaiv Alumina Plant» for the use of subsoil, namely for the extraction of artesian water from the Halytsynove deposit.
It will be recalled that in 2023 a decision was made to nationalize the Mykolaiv alumina plant, which belonged to the Russian oligarch Oleg Derypaska.
The Mykolaiv city government has been cooperating with the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant for many years. In 2017, the city's mayor, Oleksandr Sienkevych, signed a memorandum of cooperation with MAP, under which the company undertook to spend 5 million hryvnias on the development of city facilities.
In the spring of 2020, MAP announced the suspension of work due to the blocking of supplies of raw materials from Customs. Then the mayor of Mykolaiv appealed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyi with a request to help in solving the problem with the supply of raw materials for the restoration of the plant.
In 2020, the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant helped Mykolaiv with the construction of a modular hospital for the treatment of patients with COVID-19 on the basis of City Hospital No. 5 in the Ship District. According to Oleksandr Sienkevych, at that time the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry allocated 155 million hryvnias for these works.
