The families of the military personnel who died as a result of a rocket attack on the barracks in Mykolaiv are asking to hand over the life-imprisoned prosecutor Hennadii Herman to Russia in exchange for the captured marines.
With such an appeal, the families came to a meeting in the Odesa court, which was considering the appeal of an ex-law enforcement officer convicted of treason, writes NikVesti.
The attack on the barracks of the 36th separate brigade of marines named after of Rear Admiral Mykhailo Bilinskyi in Mykolaiv happened on the morning of March 18, 2022.
There are no official data on the number of dead. The New York Times wrote about the death of about 40 servicemen, and the AFP agency, citing the Ukrainian military, wrote that «no less than 200 soldiers were sleeping in the barracks» during the attack by Russian troops.
Ex-head of the Mykolaiv District Prosecutor's Office, Gennady Herman, is directly linked to the attack on the building. However, he never admitted his guilt, calling all the evidence «insufficient and unreliable.»
However, Herman sent the consequences of the arrival of Russian S-300s to the barracks to the Russian propagandist Yurii Podoliak.
After the verdict was confirmed by appeal, the parents of the dead soldiers say that Hennadii Herman must be exchanged for Ukrainian marines who are prisoners of war. It should be noted that among all the prisoners in the Russian Federation, representatives of the units of the Mykolaiv brigades are mostly there.
«I monitored such a practice that after the verdict of the appeal court enters into legal force, they are engaged in the exchange of traitors for our prisoners. Just as Medvedchuk was exchanged, we want their traitor to be exchanged (Hennadiy Herman, note), who is important to them because he cooperated with them. We think that we can exchange many guys for him alone,» said the mother of the fallen Ukrainian soldier and the head of the NGO «Human Rights Group» Oksana Rutska in a comment to the journalists of Suspilne.Odesa.
We will remind you that on August 7, the Odesa Court of Appeals left unchanged the sentence of the former head of the Mykolaiv District Prosecutor's Office, Hennadii Herman, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for treason.
The case of Mykolaiv prosecutor Hennadii Herman
In early April 2022, the head of the Mykolaiv District Prosecutor's Office was detained for cooperation with the occupiers. Prosecutor Hennadii Herman was arrested.
In January 2023, during a court hearing in the Primorskyi District Court of Odesa, it became known that the prosecutor, who was accused of treason, passed on data to the Russian propaganda blogger Yurii Podolyak and one of the leaders of the DNR, the field commander of the illegal armed formation «Donbas Militia» Ihor Bezler.
Then the traitorous prosecutor admitted that he was directing fire at the building of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, which was hit by a cruise missile in March 2022.
On June 28, 2023, according to the decision of the Odessa court, Herman was found guilty of treason.
On August 10, 2023, the lawyers of the Mykolaiv public prosecutor filed an appeal. On September 15, the appeal was heard in the Odesa Court of Appeal.
Hennadii Herman is also associated with launching a rocket attack in March 2022 on the barracks in Mykolaiv, where a large number of soldiers died.
