In Mykolaiv region, a spill of vegetable oil into the soil and waters of the Bug Estuary caused environmental damage worth 45 million ryvnias.

This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Environment.

On Saturday, 28 December 2024, in Mykolaiv, UAV debris damaged a vegetable oil tank of an agricultural enterprise. Approximately 1,800 tonnes of sunflower oil got into the soil and waters of the Bug Estuary.

The contaminated area was initially 1,000 square metres, and by 2 January 2025, it had increased to 9,000 square metres. In some places, the oil layer reached 10 centimetres thick.

Environmentalists have already taken samples of water and soil, and in some places the pollution level has reached 189.7 mg/dm³.

According to Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych, as of 3 January 2025, 70 tonnes of oil have already been pumped out of the Southern Bug. In addition, equipment is being used to remove the contaminated soil layer.

Specialists of the State Emergency Service are installing boom barriers to stop the oil from spreading further.

As a reminder, on the night of 28 December, air defence forces destroyed 12 enemy Shahed 131/136 drones over Mykolaiv region. At the time, it was reported that two fires broke out as a result of air defence operations and falling debris: on the roof of a five-storey residential building and on the territory of an industrial enterprise where dry grass caught fire.
