The director of the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks», Dmytro Chuchmai, said that 15 million hryvnias is needed to inventory trees in Mykolaiv.
He said this during a briefing at the Mykolaiv City Council on Thursday, 16 January, according to NikVesti.
According to Dmytro Chuchmai, the company has two specialists who carry out inventory work, but they cannot cover the entire city due to lack of money.
«They have plans, deadlines and so on, but now, unfortunately, we cannot cover it all. It costs a lot of money, roughly about ₴15 million,» said Dmytro Chuchmai.
He also said that it is possible to create an electronic map of plantations in Mykolaiv, but there is no money for this. Dmytro Chuchmai also noted that he is ready to cooperate on this project with specialists and environmental students.
«It's not difficult, but it costs money. We are ready to cooperate with anyone who wants to. But usually, everything ends with just words: «We want», and that's it. If there are specialists who are ready to help, please contact us,» said Dmytro Chuchmai.
Why do we need an audit of green areas?
When taking an inventory of each green space facility, a record of plantations is kept, indicating the tree species, age, height, diameter, quality condition, and book value. The data for each facility should be updated on a scheduled basis every five years.
Generalisation of such information for all green facilities allows obtaining comprehensive data on the number and condition of green spaces in the city, monitoring key indicators over time, determining the best methods of green space maintenance, and provides an opportunity to develop a greening programme for the city, taking into account adaptation to climate change.
An example of a green space accounting system can be seen in the experience of Odesa, where an online map of the city's parks and squares has already been created . It was launched by the municipal enterprise «Miskzelentrest», which deals with green spaces in the city.
The open map of Odesa's trees allows the utility to take an inventory of green spaces, automatically number trees and determine their GPS coordinates. The interactive map also contains data on the total area occupied by green facilities, determines the number of trees and shrubs by plantation type, species, age, diameter, and the cost of the entire green space and its individual sections.

In addition, by registering on the site, any user can upload a photo of a tree or bush, specify its address and condition, and the utility company will process and verify the information. If it is correct, the data will be added to the map.
