In 2023, the number of publications in the Ukrainian language on the most popular social networks, such as Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, increased significantly.

This is stated in the annual report of the language ombudsman.

As part of a study called «Usage of the Ukrainian language in social networks» conducted by the Center for Content Analysis, sociologists analyzed trends in the use of the Ukrainian and Russian languages on the Internet from 2020 to 2023.

To do this, they analyzed more than a million publications on popular social networks, including those that are banned in Ukraine (Odnoklassniki and VKontakte). The geographical location of users was also taken into account, which was determined from the information in their profiles, taking into account temporarily occupied territories, such as Crimea and Sevastopol.

«The changes in the ratio of the use of the Ukrainian and Russian languages in various social networks that took place from October 2020 to October 2023 turned out to be the most revealing. The Ukrainian language became noticeably dominant in almost all the most popular social networks,» says the ombudsman.

So, sociologists found that as of October 2023, the absolute majority of posts on Instagram — more than 90% — were written in Ukrainian.

Facebook and X (Twitter) have a little less (75-80%) posts in Ukrainian.

YouTube is the undisputed leader in the growth dynamics of the Ukrainian language. A study conducted in June 2022 did not reveal any significant changes in the use of the Ukrainian language on YouTube compared to the pre-war period.

As a reminder, Ukraine was included in the 20 most influential countries in the world according to the Global Soft Power Index 2023 rating. No other country in the history of this and similar ratings has improved its result so radically.

Also, according to the results of 2022, Ukraine received 33 points out of 100 possible in the Corruption Perception Index. Thus, the indicator increased by one point, and Ukraine now ranks 116th in the rating (out of 180).
