Mykolaiv lacks the funds to install road signs

There is no funding available for installing road signs in Mykolaiv, where there is a shortage of them on the roads. When funds become available, signs will be installed first and foremost in areas with high accident rates.

This was discussed at a meeting of the Mykolaiv City Council’s Housing and Utilities Committee on 21 September, according to NikVesti.

It should be recalled that at a session of the Mykolaiv City Council on 1 September, councillor Yevhen Prudnyk («Opposition party — For Life») addressed the mayor regarding the situation with road signs, in particular, right-of-way signs. He suggested checking whether such signs were in place on the main streets, as, according to the councillor, drivers tend to drive out of habit rather than in accordance with the Highway Code.

At the committee meeting, Yevhen Prudnyk said that following his address at the council session, some signs had already appeared on the roads. However, he asked that attention also be paid to other streets, particularly 3rd Voenna Street and the streets adjacent to it.

Oleh Kuksa, Deputy Head of the Transport Department, pointed out that, according to the Highway Code, if a driver cannot determine whether a road is a main road or a minor road, they must treat it as a minor road.

«At the moment, I cannot recall how much funding is required to manufacture and install road signs. At present, the municipal enterprise KP SMEP (Specialised Installation and Maintenance Enterprise, — note) lacks the necessary funds. When the funds become available, the municipal enterprise will install road signs gradually, not all at once,» said Oleh Kuksa.

First and foremost, the deputy head of the transport department noted, road signs will be installed on roads with a high accident rate.

It was previously reported that two-way traffic had been introduced on Spaska Street along the following sections:

• from Arkasivska Street to Oleksii Vadaturskyi Street;
• along Oleksii Vadaturskyi Street from Spaska Street to Velyka Morska Street;
• from Zakhysnykiv Mykolaieva Street to Heroiv Riatuvalnykiv Street.

The Executive Committee authorised two-way traffic on these sections at its meeting on 28 August. Previously, one-way traffic had been in force on the section of Spaska Street between Defenders of Mykolaiv Street and Heroes of the Rescuers Street. Due to these restrictions, social service vehicles transporting people with disabilities were unable to access the area from the required side without breaking the rules.
