Former Chancellor Merkel says Ukraine cannot remain an independent state without US support

Ангела МеркельAngela Merkel

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that Ukraine will not be able to remain an independent country without the support of the United States and NATO.

This was reported by FAZ.

Merkel stressed that the transatlantic partnership is even more necessary today than before.

«With Russia's attack on Ukraine, the basic principle of the European post-war order — territorial integrity — has become ineffective,» she said, speaking at a reception of the Christian Democratic Union in Düsseldorf.

According to her, only with the United States and within the framework of NATO can it be ensured that Putin does not win the war and that Ukraine remains an independent state.

At the same time, Angela Merkel called Trump «a special president» who protects the legitimate interests of the United States.

«We will not change Donald Trump, but we can react to him. We are also a strong factor,» Merkel said.

Yesterday, it was reported that German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock and other lawmakers criticised Chancellor Olaf Scholz for refusing to approve an additional military aid package for Kyiv.
