Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which he said that steps to ensure the safety of navigation in the Black Sea would help establish peace in Ukraine.

This was reported by the Turkish president's press service today, 28 March.

The statement noted that Ankara is closely monitoring peace initiatives between Kyiv and Moscow and is ready to facilitate negotiations, in particular by organising them on Turkish territory.

«Turkey is ready to provide any assistance, including the organisation of peace talks, to ensure a just and lasting peace», the statement said.

Erdogan stressed that ensuring safe navigation in the Black Sea is an important step towards resolving the conflict. He also stressed that Turkey is making efforts to prevent the Black Sea from becoming a war zone.

Earlier it was reported that the US, Ukraine and Russia agreed at talks in Saudi Arabia to ensure safe navigation and «exclude the use of force» in the Black Sea.
