President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has instructed to organise elections after a full ceasefire is reached. According to preliminary data, they may be held as early as July 2025.

This was reported by The Economist.

The publication's government sources say that last week, Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting at which he instructed his team to prepare elections after the cessation of hostilities. Bloomberg reports that the United States hopes to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine by Easter, 20 April.

The Economist writes that the first confirmation of elections could come on the eve of or on 5 May, the deadline for parliament to vote on whether to extend martial law, which ends on 8 May. The lifting of martial law is a key step for the start of the electoral process.

While sources disagree on the exact timeline, most believe Zelenskyy is targeting elections this summer. The law requires at least 60 days of campaigning, so the earliest possible time for elections is early July.

Some sources say that the campaign could last three months, as electoral authorities need more time to update voter lists. This issue has already been discussed in parliament.

According to a senior official, the plan to hold the election in July may be aimed at catching opponents off guard. A short period of preparation would allow Zelenskyy to run without significant opposition. The source also notes that such a scenario could be beneficial not only for the president.

«A long campaign could split the country», he added.

As a reminder, the vast majority of Ukrainians oppose holding elections in the event of a temporary ceasefire and support them only after the war is completely over.

In general, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that elections in Ukraine are very important, but they can be held only after the hot phase of the war is over and martial law is lifted.
