It is planned to rebuild the destroyed facade of the historic Mykola Arkas Lyceum (First Ukrainian Mykola Arkas Gymnasium) by the end of 2025.
This is stated in the article NikVesti «What will the restoration of Mykolaiv look like in 2025?».
The reconstruction is funded by the Danish government, and the work is overseen by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
In early 2025, the City Council's Capital Construction Department, UNOPS, and the contractor signed a trilateral agreement. However, it is still necessary to obtain permission from the State Inspectorate of Architecture and Urban Development to start work, which was impossible without signing the agreement, Oleksii Savchuk, director of the department, explained in a comment to NikVesti.
«On 16 January, we signed a trilateral agreement. This makes it possible to obtain a building permit in the future. There was a delay because UNOPS has never worked under a trilateral agreement before and therefore required a long approval process with Copenhagen. We are now in the process of obtaining the permit,» explained Oleksii Savchuk.
Currently, a construction fence has already been installed around the Arkas Lyceum and preparatory emergency work has begun. In total, the school will be built in three stages:
Emergency works: dismantling the building's emergency structures.
Stabilisation works: major repairs to the roof and walls; restoration of the facade, but without restoring ornaments and other finishing elements; preparation for the construction of a shelter.
Resumption of the educational process: renovation of the lyceum premises and arrangement of the shelter. The development of project documentation for interior works is still underway.
The Capital Construction Department expects to receive apermit from the State Architectural Inspectorate to start construction work in February, and complete the stabilisation work by the end of 2025.
«We will get the permit in February, I am sure of it. As for the execution of the works, we hope that this second stage will be completed by the end of the year,» said Oleksii Savchuk.

Arkas Gymnasium during the war
The historic building of the First Ukrainian Mykola Arkas Gymnasium was destroyed on 1 November 2022 during the bombing of Mykolaiv by Russian troops. As a result of the shelling, a part of the wall fell down, the interior of the school classrooms opened up, and the roof over the facade was damaged.
Later, the Mykolaiv City Council's education department said that the lyceum building would be restored at the expense of Denmark. Later, Ukrainian architects presented options for the restoration and renovation of the Mykola Arkas Lyceum to Danish Ambassador Ole Egberg Mikkelsen. At the same time, he assured that the city authorities of Mykolaiv would choose the option for reconstruction.
Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych said that the lyceum would be restored while preserving its authentic appearance. Yurii Liubarov, head of the city council's culture department, spoke about one of the options for reconstructing the destroyed facade of the First Ukrainian Arkas Gymnasium. He suggested preserving the destroyed part of the façade in a glass «aquarium», while strengthening the floors, and restoring the rest of the façade to its authentic state in a classical way.
At the same time, in the capital expenditures of the Mykolaiv budget for 2023, the cost of the Arkas Gymnasium reconstruction project, according to the document, is 300 million hryvnias. The reconstruction period was set to last until the end of 2030.
After that, the City Council's Capital Construction Department ordered an adjustment to the scientific and design documentation for the restoration of the Arkas Gymnasium.
