The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is currently restoring high-rise buildings and courtyards in the Lisky neighbourhood of Mykolaiv damaged by shelling.

This was reported by Deputy Mayor Serhiy Korenev in a comment to NikVesti.

The contractor is currently working at the intersection of Oleksa Almazov (formerly Karpenko) and Yevhenii Lohinov (formerly Krylov) streets. UNOPS is implementing two projects there, one of which is the restoration of high-rise buildings damaged by shelling, explained Serhii Koreniev.

«In fact, two projects are being implemented there, but within the framework of one UNOPS funding from Denmark. One project is financing the restoration of residential buildings in three neighbourhoods: Lisky-1, Lisky-2, and Korabelnyi district. And one of them is the intersection of Karpenko and Krylova streets. We are in the process of repairing residential buildings there: replacing windows and doors, as well as some routine maintenance work on residential buildings. People are satisfied because the quality of the work is really good. They are using energy-efficient technologies: not only are windows being replaced, but new balconies are being completely finished. It's a really good project,» said Serhii Koreniev.

At the same time, UNOPS is also improving the area around the restored residential buildings, the deputy mayor added.

«The second part of the project involves the construction of an in-block passage. Almost half of the work has already been completed there: approaches to the house, parking spaces and the passages themselves are being arranged,» said Serhii Koreniev.

In particular, he said, the contractor will be laying a new road near School №17, which is located next to the houses.

«Let's just say that asphalt is being laid where it has never been. This creates a completely different environment for our residents of this particular neighbourhood,» added Serhii Koreniev.

According to him, all these works are planned to be completed in the spring of 2025.

«They are expected to complete this project by early spring or early summer,» the deputy mayor added.

The reconstruction of the Lisky-1 neighbourhood required 55.5 million hryvnias and Lisky-2 - 44.4 million hryvnias, as NikVesti wrote earlier, citing data from the state DREAM system.

Denmark's cooperation with Mykolaiv

Back in March 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking to the Danish Parliament, called on the country to take «patronage» over Mykolaiv after the end of the full-scale war.

Five months later, in August 2022, the mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, and the Danish Minister for International Development, Flemming Møller Mortensen, signed a memorandum of cooperation. It envisages joint work on developing reconstruction projects and attracting investors from different countries to rebuild Mykolaiv. The Danish Embassy also has an office in the city.

In January 2023 , representatives of Denmark and Ukraine met in Mykolaiv to plan further reconstruction of the city.

In January 2024, the Kingdom of Denmark allocated $21 million to rebuild the Mykolaiv region. In May, $17.2 million was allocated to rebuild destroyed educational institutions in the region, and in June, €33.5 million was allocated to restore infrastructure and improve access to water and electricity.

In September 2024, Ukraine received new aid packages from Denmark, including €44 million for Mykolaiv region.

In total, about 60% of the aid that Denmark sends to Ukraine goes to Mykolaiv and Mykolaiv region, said Ole Egberg Mikkelsen, Ambassador of Denmark to Ukraine. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the country has provided $118 million in aid to the region. He also stated his vision for the post-war reconstruction of Mykolaiv with pedestrian-friendly conditions and bicycle infrastructure.

While in Mykolaiv, the ambassador explained that Denmark would help Mykolaiv restore and modernise its shipbuilding facilities after the end of the full-scale war.

In particular, the country will rebuild the Mykola Arkas Lyceum while preserving its authentic appearance.

The ambassador also supported the idea of creating a Danish quarter or park in Mykolaiv, but this issue is still at the stage of an idea.

Denmark has also expressed interest in privatising the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant.

In turn, Deputy Mayor of Mykolaiv Serhii Koreniev said that Denmark plans to help the city for the next 10 years.

And in October 2024, representatives of «Engineers Without Borders» from Denmark visited Mykolaiv to study the situation with the implementation of the Danish Recovery Programme projects.
