Schools in Mykolaiv have been experiencing an outflow of students since the start of the full-scale war. As of February, the number of students decreased by 940 people compared to the beginning of the school year.

This was reported by the head of the education department of the Mykolaiv City Council, Hanna Lychko, during a briefing on Friday, 28 February, according to NikVesti.

«Unfortunately, I constantly state the fact that we have an outflow of students during the war. If on the first of September there were 37,814 children, today, on 28 February 2025, we have 36,955 children. The number of students in Mykolaiv has decreased by 940 people. This is such a bad fact, because 900 is practically one huge school», said Hanna Lychko.

However, she added that the number of internally displaced students in Mykolaiv has increased by 264 people and totals 1530 children.

«As for the number of internally displaced persons, we have 264 more of them, so we have 1530 children studying in secondary schools. As of today, 136 people from the temporarily occupied territories continue to study with us», added Hanna Lychko.

She also noted that currently 7% of students are in other cities of Ukraine, but continue their studies in Mykolaiv schools, and another 16% of students remain abroad.

As a reminder, due to the outflow of schoolchildren, classes in Mykolaiv were merged into remote learning institutions. As a result, some teachers were laid off.
