There are 446 libraries in the Mykolaiv region, of which only 205 have barrier-free access to their premises, both outside and inside.

This was announced on Wednesday, 28 January, during a briefing by Olena Buberenko, Head of the Department of Culture, Nationalities and Religions of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, according to NikVesti.

«Today, there are 446 libraries in the region that are implementing projects as part of the national barrier-free strategy. Unfortunately, only 205 libraries currently provide unobstructed access to their premises, both outside and inside. This requires very large financial investments, and we are trying to do everything we can to make our institutions physically barrier-free,» said Olena Buberenko.

She added that it is difficult to create barrier-free spaces in buildings that are architectural monuments, as this requires restoration work.

«The regional universal library and the Mykolaiv Regional Art Museum are architectural monuments. It is not easy to create complete accessibility inside these buildings, as special restoration solutions are required. However, we are gradually equipping such facilities with ramps and sanitary rooms for people with disabilities and improving information accessibility,» the official concluded.

We would like to remind you that in Mykolaiv, residents have brought to the attention of the city authorities the problem of accessibility of one of the pedestrian crossings on Myru Avenue, near the Peremoha Square stop. People complain that the ramp does not meet accessibility requirements.
