The flooded ‘Dormashina’ stop following the May downpour in Mykolaiv. Photo: NikVestiIn Mykolaiv on 21 May, several streets in various parts of the city were flooded following heavy rain. The worst flooding was recorded near the Dormashyna bus stop and by the ATB supermarket.
This was reported by correspondents from NikVesti.
In the Dormashina area, water quickly accumulated on the carriageway following heavy rainfall. This caused traffic disruption: drivers had to detour around flooded sections, and significant traffic jams formed in some places. A similar situation was also observed on Sadova, Pohranychna (Chyhryna), 9th Slobidska (Marshal Vasylevskyi) and Kovalska (Skorokhodova) streets.
The downpour caused disruption to public transport in the city. According to eyewitnesses, some trolleybuses stopped running, whilst others operated on battery power and altered their routes to avoid flooded areas. Some minibuses were also forced to take detours, causing traffic jams in the city centre.

The flooded Dormashina after the May downpour in Mykolaiv. Photo: NikVestiA difficult situation also arose near the ATB supermarket on Hromadianska Street and Tsentralnyi Avenue. There, water flooded the road and parked cars — according to preliminary data, around twenty vehicles were flooded.
As one of the drivers who had left his car near the ATB supermarket told NikVesti, the water level began to rise rapidly after he had gone into the shop.
«I came to the shop to do some shopping, bought what I needed, and when I came out, the water had already started to rise. The car won’t start now. I’m afraid to start it in case I make things worse. I want it to dry out, and then I’ll sort it out,» said Mykola.

As of now, the flooding in the Dormashyna area has been cleared. Municipal services continue to work on site and are dealing with the aftermath of the bad weather in other parts of the city.
It should be recalled that during a staff meeting on 11 May, Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych raised the issue of the condition of the central sewer in the area of Mala Morska Street (near Dormashyna). At that time, he addressed Vitaliy Shevchenko, director of «ELU Avtodorig», with a question regarding the status of the drainage system clearance, in particular the city’s largest sewer.
In response, Vitalii Shevchenko noted that cleaning work was ongoing at the site.
«Work is ongoing on this sewer, and even at night we saw that after the downpour on 10 May, the sewer was quite clean in the section we had already cleared; there were no blockages. We simply need to continue cleaning it systematically, and I think things will improve,» he said.
In response, the mayor emphasised the need to monitor the work and stated his intention to personally inspect the condition of the sewer.
«Please continue to clean it. I would like to go down there in a month’s time, repeat our trip from last year and see what changes have taken place inside during the time you have been cleaning it,» noted Oleksandr Sienkevych.
It is also worth recalling that as recently as 7 May, during a live broadcast, the director of «ELU Avtodorig», Vitaliy Shevchenko, announced the ongoing cleaning of the sewer in the Dormashyna area so that it could handle a greater volume of water during heavy rainfall.
«This year we are working on stormwater systems, but no major or large-scale repairs to the networks are planned. The priority is maintaining the fourth sewer in the Dormashyna area, which we are constantly clearing so that it can handle as much water as possible during heavy downpours,» added Vitalii Shevchenko.

In the summer of 2021, the Department of Housing and Communal Services of Mykolaiv City Council commissioned a project to construct stormwater drains on Tsentralnyi Avenue. At the time, Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych suggested that City Council member Vladyslav Chaika take responsibility and oversee the project from start to finish.
In 2023, Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych told NikVesti that the stormwater collector on Dormashina in Mykolaiv had been reconstructed. According to him, this should have prevented further flooding.
However, in June 2024, following heavy rainfall, Dormashyna was flooded, as has become customary.
Earlier, the head of the Central District administration, Oleksandr Bereza, stated that the district is constantly flooded during rain because an ancient riverbed used to run through this area.
In July 2024, Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych personally descended into the storm drain to inspect its condition.
Last year, municipal workers cleared around 108 tonnes of rubbish from the storm drain on Central Avenue in the Dormashyna area. This spot remains one of the most problematic in the city — the drain gets blocked more often than any other.
