The UOC-MP, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, operates in Ukraine as a self-governing church under the Russian Orthodox Church. In August 2024 the Verkhovna Rada passed and the President signed a law banning religious organisations linked to Russia in Ukraine, and almost all MPs from Mykolaiv Oblast voted for it. By the end of 2023 only 10 of the 296 Moscow Patriarchate churches in Mykolaiv Oblast had moved to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. In 2023 the Russian Orthodox Church listed Mykolaiv bishops of the UOC-MP in its “Patriarchal Calendar”.
