On Thursday, 20 December, rescuers continue to eliminate the consequences of a Russian drone strike that hit the shelter of the 4th power unit at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.
According to the press service of the State Emergency Service, the climbers continue to partially open the shelter structure and eliminate smouldering. In addition, drones with thermal imagers are being used to monitor the situation and detect new fires.
Rescuers assure that the radiation background on the territory of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant is within normal limits and there is no threat to the public.
«There is no threat to the public. The situation is under control», the agency said.

As a reminder, on the night of 14 February, a Russian attack drone hit a shelter over the destroyed fourth power unit of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.
Later, the Government allocated more than 1.5 billion hryvnias to keep the Chornobyl NPP shelter safe after the Russian attack. The funding was increased by 139 million hryvnias compared to 2024.
As it is known, in June last year, the Verkhovna Rada ratified a framework agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) on the operation of the International Cooperation Account for Chornobyl.
