The Mykolaiv City Council has discovered why both elephants at the zoo are male: «European traditions»

At the plenary session of the Mykolaiv City Council on Wednesday, 9 July, councillors – in an attempt to identify a councillor and the zoo’s director, Volodymyr Topchyi, via Zoom – began to enquire as to why there were two male elephants living at the zoo.

This was reported by NikVesti.

The situation arose when Volodymyr Topchyi was unable to switch on his camera during the online Zoom meeting due to technical difficulties.

To ensure that it was indeed the councillor who had joined the meeting, and not someone else or even ‘artificial intelligence’, the mayor, Oleksandr Senkevych, decided to ask him a few questions, the answers to which, in his opinion, only the zoo director could know. First, the mayor asked what the name of the elephant without a tusk was.

«What is the name of the elephant without a tusk?»

«Dinkar,» replied Volodymyr Topchyi.

After the correct answer, Oleksandr Sienkevych asked another question.

«Right. Why do we have two male elephants? Why are there no females?»

«We follow European traditions…»

«I see…» replied the mayor.

«In the Dutch way…» replied the zoo director.

«Right, that sounds like Topchyi,» said the mayor.

After that, the mayor concluded his inspection, and Volodymyr Topchyi successfully passed identification and continued to take part in the plenary session.

It is worth noting that the Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, so the remark about «European» and «Dutch» traditions was a light-hearted reference.
