A pilot project on epidemiological surveillance of the content of viruses in wastewater is operating in Mykolaiv.

This was reported in the Mykolaiv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine

It is noted that the pilot project has been operational since August 12. Specialists take water samples for COVID-19 and flu viruses.

«This measure is aimed at early detection of the circulation of viruses in the region and prevention of further spread of infection among the population,» the message reads.

Wastewater sampling takes place at the Mykolaiv city sewage treatment plants.

«It is important to note that sewage is a potential source of information about the spread of the virus, because it contains the waste of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 (abbreviated official name of COVID-19, — note),» the regional control and prevention center added diseases

The results of the research will be used to plan further measures to combat the pandemic.

In Pervomaisk, Mykolaiv Region, an increase in the number of cases of COVID-19 was recorded. 48 people fell ill during the week.

In August 2024, the Ministry of Health (MOH) approved updated recommendations for vaccination against the coronavirus.
