The issue was considered at a session on 3 February, according to NikVesti.
The streets are located in the Matviivka microdistrict of the Central District of Mykolaiv. In particular, Komarov Street was renamed Ocheretiana Street. The explanatory note states that this street leads to the riverbank, where reeds have grown since ancient times, which became the basis for the locally tied name.
The name Volodymyr Komarov is included in the list of the ten most common «Russian» street names in Ukraine, which are recommended to be renamed first, as they were used as an element of propaganda for the so-called «superiority of Russian culture and science».
Dmytro Ulianov Street has also been renamed 1st Naberezhna Street. This is explained by the fact that Dmytro Ulianov Lane had already been renamed 1st Naberezhna Lane nearby, and it was decided to apply the new name by analogy in order to streamline the naming system in this area.
The reason for the renaming was that Dmitry Ulyanov was a Soviet figure who held senior positions in the USSR government and participated in the establishment of Soviet power in Ukraine.
Both draft decisions were unanimously supported by 28 deputies.
Renaming of toponyms in Mykolaiv
In April 2023, the Mykolaiv City Council adopted a new regulation on renaming toponyms in order to get rid of all Russian names in the city. After that, the deputy commission on legality approved a new version of the regulation on the activities of the commission on toponymy, which was responsible for renaming streets.
In particular, Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych reported that the city had a toponymy commission that was engaged in renaming streets, but its composition needed to be updated.
In August of the same year, it became known that the toponymy commission had not yet begun its work. Due to the withdrawal of one of the candidates, the city council deputies had to renew the commission's membership. At a session on 7 September, the deputies of the Mykolaiv City Council approved the new membership of the toponymy commission. Major General Dmytro Marchenko was included in it, but with the note «subject to approval». Dmytro Marchenko's name was one of those proposed by Mykolaiv residents for renaming the city's streets. The proposal was submitted by 32 respondents. However, the general himself opposed the idea.
In October 2023, the commission published its first proposals for renaming streets as part of the decolonisation process. In particular, Yurii Lyubarov, head of the Mykolaiv City Council's culture department, who is also a member of the toponymic commission, said that Falieievska Street, named after the city's first citizen, is not subject to the renaming law.
In January 2024, the toponymic commission completed its work in Mykolaiv — about 250 streets are being prepared for renaming. The head of the commission, Oleksandr Tryhub, explained which streets will receive new names in accordance with modern Ukrainian spelling and historical context. In particular, the central streets of Liahina, Pushkinska, Potemkinska and Admiral Makarov will receive new names.
As part of the decolonisation process, the commission also proposed renaming 40 streets after those who died in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
In February, language ombudsman Taras Kremin criticised the pace of renaming in the Mykolaiv region. He stated that it was the south that once suffered most from Russification, but the removal of Russian names from the region is proceeding very slowly.
As is known, the district administrations of the city are responsible for installing signs with new street names in Mykolaiv.
