Honouring fallen soldiers in Mykolaiv region

In January 2023, Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych announced that the city council was developing a plan to create a memorial sector for Mykolaiv residents who died as a result of the full-scale war.

After that, plans were announced to build an Alley of Memory for fallen soldiers and defenders in Mykolaiv in 2024. The mayor later announced that the city council had already decided on a location for it: it will be on Kherson Highway, opposite the Mykolaiv Zoo.

Later, it became known that three cemeteries in the city are planning to set up special sections for the honourable burial of fallen soldiers:

  • the cemetery in the Matviivka microdistrict on Verkhnia Street, 161;
  • the cemetery in the Korabelnyi district on Zhukova Street;
  • Balabanivskyi Cemetery in the Korabelnyi district.

The preliminary cost of building a military cemetery in the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv is 47 million hryvnias.

And at the city cemetery in Balovne, Mykolaiv, they plan to create an Alley of Glory where fallen soldiers who gave their lives for the independence and sovereignty of the country will be buried.

In the summer of 2023, the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Mykolaiv City Council announced two large-scale architectural competitions for the best designs of memorial complexes for soldiers — defenders of Ukraine.

A year later, in the summer of 2024, the Mykolaiv Department of Architecture approved the design of a memorial complex in honour of the soldiers who died in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

The issue of honouring the memory of fallen defenders is also being considered in other cities in the Mykolaiv region. In particular, in Pivdennoukrainsk, a memorial stele was erected on the Walk of Fame of the city cemetery in memory of the fallen soldiers. Another 20 memorial signs to Ukrainian soldiers will also be installed there.

At the same time, a new cemetery will be built in Bashtanka, with a separate section for the burial of military personnel, and in Pervomaisk, the families of the fallen have proposed creating an Alley of Glory in the city centre.

The first phase of work on the Alley of Glory in Pervomaisk is expected to cost 9.6 million hryvnias.
