UNDP dismantled 25 destroyed buildings in Mykolaiv region and removed over 52,000 tonnes of construction waste in one year

Work continues in Mykolaiv and the surrounding region to dismantle buildings destroyed during the war. In 2025, 25 buildings were dismantled and 10 public spaces were cleared as part of a project to manage waste from the destruction.

This was reported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in a comment to NikVesti.

In total, over 111,000 tonnes of construction waste were removed and sorted in the Mykolaiv region during the year, of which more than 52,000 tonnes were in Mykolaiv itself.

One of the sites where the organisation carried out work was Building №2 of the Sukhomlynskyi Mykolaiv National University, which was partially destroyed in the summer of 2022. Its rubble began to be cleared in October 2024 with the support of the European Union.

In 2025, demolition work was carried out at 35 locations in the communities of Mykolaiv, Snihurivka, Shyroke, Bereznehuvate and Pervomaiske.

The duration of the demolition depends on the size and condition of the building. For example, dismantling a small private house can take 2-3 days, while dismantling a multi-storey building, such as a 16-storey building, can take up to three months.

«Within the framework of the project, expenses are accounted for and reported at the contract and project level as a whole, since the contractor performed work simultaneously at different sites and in several regions. Therefore, it is incorrect to cite the 'average cost per site' without detailing the specific building and the conditions under which the work was carried out,» the UNDP said.

The UNDP notes that in 2026, it plans to continue work on managing debris from the destruction. Currently, the organisation, together with city and regional authorities, is identifying potential sites for further demolition in order to quickly begin work after receiving funding and the necessary approvals.

Recycling of demolition waste in Mykolaiv

The construction waste recycling plant in Mykolaiv began operations in the spring of 2025. The project was implemented with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which provided specialised equipment, while the site for the plant was developed using city budget funds.

The equipment has the capacity to process about 12,000 tonnes of such waste per month, and the resulting material will be used for road repairs.

By the end of 2024, about 120,000 tonnes of construction waste had accumulated in Mykolaiv. As of January 2025, the plant had processed 4,500 tonnes of demolition waste into building materials.

In a comment to NikVesti, Deputy Mayor Serhii Korenev said that the construction waste processing plant in Mykolaiv is planned to be used for the needs of two more regions: Kherson and part of Kirovohrad.

At the same time, communities that want to use the services of the construction waste processing plant after the destruction are offered two options for cooperation. In the first, they can transfer all waste for processing at a lower price, and in the second, they can receive the processed material back, but this option will be more expensive.

As of February 2026, 4.6 million tonnes of debris had already accumulated in the Mykolaiv region.
