Electricity consumption limits for the Mykolaiv region should be increased. This will make it possible to turn off the light for no more than 2 hours in case of blackouts.

This was said by the head of Mykolayiv RMA Vitalii Kim during a briefing on Thursday, August 8, NikVesti reports.

Mykolaiv Oblast currently produces at least twice as much electricity as it consumes, not including the capacity of the South Ukraine NPP, says Vitalii Kim. During the meeting with the Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko, they raised the issue of fair distribution of energy between regions.

«Mykolaiv Oblast generates, in addition to the nuclear plant, about 600 MW of connected capacities. These are just the main ones. Plus 170 — wind, plus the sun and so on. Constant use of about 360 MW. Now there are limits of 120 MW, but if there are emergency shutdowns, then maybe 200. Without a nuclear plant, we produce at least twice as much as we consume. Now this structure is being formed in such a way that we have outages for 2 hours, no more,» said Vitalii Kim.

In addition, the head of RMA noted that this increase in limits is affected by the number of critical infrastructure and water problems.

«We take into account the fact that we have many critical structures, there are problems with water, with water treatment. This was also taken into account. And separately, the city of Yuzhnoukrainsk, which does not have gas, they have to cook food on electricity. These issues were discussed at the meeting and were taken as a protocol assignment. We are definitely ready, the question depends only on military threats. But if we stay in this mode, it will be even easier from September,» he added.

But the authorities are also considering worst-case scenarios in case of deterioration in the energy system — the region will be powered by wind power plants.

Power outage in Mykolaiv Oblast

As you know, power outages across Ukraine have returned since mid-May 2024. The main reason for this is the resumption of large-scale shelling of the energy sector by the Russians, which destroyed 9.2 GW of Ukrainian generation over the past three months.

The government explained that the outages will last until August-September. And in winter, a deficit in the energy system is predicted even at high temperatures.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that the Ministry of Energy and Ukrenergo should develop a resolution that would regulate «fair schedules of turning off the lights for consumers.»

In Mykolaiv and the region, outages occur according to the queues to which the region is divided according to the Mykolaivoblenergo schedule — there are 6 of them in total. The list of addresses by queues can be viewed at the link.

Also, Mykolaivoblenergo presented a search system that should help consumers more easily navigate schedules and power outages.

It is also worth noting that almost all this time the lights were turned off according to hourly schedules for 2 hours in a row, however, on June 4, special emergency shutdown schedules were introduced in Mykolaiv and the region. Consumers were without light for 5-6 hours.

Trams and trolleybuses may not work for hours in Mykolaiv due to the lack of electricity supply.

On July 15, a petition about the unfair distribution of electricity between the regions of Ukraine appeared on the website of the Cabinet of Ministers. So far, it has more than 4,000 signatures.

The fact of breakdown at the South Ukrainian nuclear power plant also affected the long blackouts in the Mykolaiv region, which reached 16-18 hours.

However, it should be noted that since July 25, the effects of hourly shutdown schedules began to weaken in the Mykolaiv region. And at the end of July, they stopped working completely.
