Zelenskyy approved the law on the decriminalization of petty theft

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, signed a law amending the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses, regarding liability for petty theft.

This was announced by the first deputy head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Tax and Customs Policy, People's Deputy from the «Voice» faction, Yaroslav Zhelezniak.

Previously, theft of someone else's property was considered a criminal offense if its value exceeded 302 hryvnias and 80 kopecks. Now this threshold has been raised to two tax-free minimum incomes of citizens, which is 3,028 hryvnias.

The law also establishes tougher administrative penalties for petty theft:

• For theft of property worth up to 757 hryvnias, a fine of 850 to 1,700 hryvnias is provided.
• If the value of the stolen item is from 758 to 3,028 hryvnias, the fine increases to 1,700–5,100 hryvnias.
• For repeated thefts, the fine will be from 8,500 to 17,000 hryvnias.

We will remind that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine supported in the first reading draft law No. 11340, which allows officials suspected of corruption crimes to pay a fine for their offenses.
