Oleksandr Sienkevych said that in Mykolaiv they want to connect all water distribution points to autonomous power supply. Today, only half of them are equipped with diesel generators.

The mayor of Mykolaiv said this in an interview with Ukrinform.

He explained that during blackouts, the city faces serious difficulties due to the lack of a centralized drinking water supply. To ensure access to water at the distribution points, the city has to use diesel generators, which allows the points to operate for several hours a day.

«Yes, this is a problem, because we have to provide diesel generators not only to critical infrastructure facilities, but also to water distribution points. We are currently working on these issues and increasing the amount of equipment that has the ability to accumulate electricity in batteries in order to provide water for at least a few hours in the morning and evening,» said Oleksandr Sienkevych.

He noted that today there are over 200 water dispensing points in Mykolaiv, but only half of them can work during power outages. The mayor said that it is planned to transfer all water points to autonomous power supply.

«Now we have over 200 water distribution points, about half of them can work for some time when the power is turned off, but there are also limitations there. So we are trying to switch all water distribution points to full autonomous power supply. But it's not cheap, you have to install inverters and batteries,» said Oleksandr Sienkevych.

Recall that in November 2024, residents of Mykolaiv received 8.5 million liters of free purified water.

It was previously reported that the state budget of Ukraine for 2025 allocated 8 billion hryvnias for the construction of a new water supply system for Mykolaiv to provide the city with drinking water.
