The Verkhovna Rada supported the draft law, which allows those suspected of corruption to pay a fine for the crime

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine supported in the first reading draft law №11340, which allows officials suspected of corruption crimes to pay a fine for their offenses.

People's deputies Yaroslav Zhelezniak and Oleksii Honcharenko informed about it.

231 deputies voted for this bill. As deputy Yaroslav Zhelezniak notes, this happened despite warnings from NABU, SAP and the Anti-Corruption Committee.

It should be noted that according to the draft law, officials suspected of corruption will have an alternative way of resolving criminal legal conflicts:

  • in the event of a criminal misdemeanor — a fine from 204,000 hryvnias to 2.05 million hryvnias;
  • in case of committing a minor crime — a fine of 2.05 million to 204 million hryvnias;
  • in case of committing a serious crime — a fine from 20.4 million to 102 million hryvnias;
  • in case of committing a particularly serious crime — a fine from 102 million hryvnias to 204 million hryvnias.

Instead, public figures noted that this draft law would allow corruption suspects to simply atone for the crime they committed. In particular, the head of the Anti-Corruption Center Vitalii Shabunin notes that this draft law does not even provide for the confiscation of the suspect's property.

«Stolen a billion, took another 100 million, compensated them, paid another 200 million fine and live and enjoy the «earned» 700 million,» he wrote.

He noted that with the help of this law, it will be possible to «save» businessmen Ihor Kolomoiskyi and Oleh Bakhmatiuk from prison.

«After the number of corruption suspicions against people's deputies in the Rada, a rebellion is already brewing. And the possibility of redeeming oneself from punishment is the only option for maintaining control over the OP,» Vitalii Shabunin believes.

As a reminder, the Mykolaiv region was included in the list of regions where, after checking declarations by the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption, the largest number of signs of violations were found. We are talking about 19 million hryvnias.
