Rubbish collection charges are set to rise in Mykolaiv from July

In Mykolaiv, tariffs for household waste management services provided by the municipal enterprises «Mykolaivkomuntrans» and «Obrii-DKP» are set to rise from 1 July 2026.

The relevant decision was adopted by the city council’s executive committee at a meeting on 24 June, according to NikVesti.

For «Mykolaivkomuntrans», the tariff for the disposal of household waste has been set at 308.42 hryvnias per tonne or 47.50 hryvnias per cubic metre.

The following tariffs for the collection and transport of waste have also been approved for the company:

• mixed household waste — 382.69 hryvnias per cubic metre;
• bulky waste — 612.32 hryvnias per cubic metre;
• renovation waste — 612.32 hryvnias per cubic metre.

The following tariffs have been set for the municipal enterprise «Obrii-DKP»:

• collection of mixed household waste — 378.28 hryvnias per cubic metre;
• bulky waste — 1,153.83 hryvnias per cubic metre;
• construction waste — 1,170.64 hryvnias per cubic metre.

Prior to this, on 1 May 2026, the tariffs for the collection of household waste by the municipal enterprise «Obrii-DKP» were increased for residents of the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv.

It should be noted that Mykolaiv City Council has approved an updated operating procedure for the household waste sorting facility. The issue sparked debate among councillors, who argued that the cost of waste sorting would fall on the shoulders of Mykolaiv’s residents. They also proposed that the sorting be carried out by a municipal enterprise rather than being outsourced to a private company.

Meanwhile, Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych announced that the international French company Veolia had expressed interest in participating in the tender to manage the household waste sorting complex in Mykolaiv.

The situation regarding the construction of a waste sorting line in Mykolaiv

The issue of waste sorting in Mykolaiv was first raised back in 2019, when the cost of two sorting lines was estimated at approximately 10 million hryvnias. At the time, Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych insisted that the costs should be borne by investors, rather than the city budget. Although a waste management programme was adopted, it was never implemented.

The Supreme Court ruled that the city council’s inaction was unlawful and ordered the construction of a sorting line, as the landfill, which has been in operation since 1972, has reached the end of its useful life.

In 2024, councillors approved the operating procedures for the municipal solid waste sorting complex and announced an investment tender. The first tender did not take place, whilst the second was won by Waste To Energy Niko Ltd. However, the company received only the minimum required score, and councillors and the head of the regional state administration, Vitalii Kim, criticised the lack of transparency in the procedure and the unfavourable terms.

Law enforcement agencies opened an investigation and carried out searches at the city council. At the session on 28 August, councillors did not support the approval of the contract with the winning bidder. The city authorities are preparing new terms for the tender. Oleksandr Sienkevych stated that the process would be public, involving international partners, notably from Denmark.
