In Mykolaiv, there are plans to install gravestones on the abandoned graves of fallen defenders of Ukraine.

The relevant changes to the procedure for honouring fallen soldiers were supported at an executive meeting on 28 January, according to NikVesti.

The draft decision provides for the updating of the current document regulating the installation of gravestones in the sectors of military graves of honour in cemeteries. This applies not only to graves where families submit applications, but also to cases where graves are neglected.

In particular, the new procedure allows for the installation of gravestones (cenotaphs) on the graves of fallen soldiers who were buried alone, or in situations where relatives refused burial or did not maintain any contact or care for the grave for a long time.

«This gives us the opportunity to install uniform grave structures on the graves of soldiers who have not been visited for more than two years because they have no relatives or their relatives are in the occupied territories,» said Dmytro Prylutskyi, deputy director of the Mykolaiv Ritual Service.

In such cases, the Mykolaiv City Council's Department for War Veterans will initiate the installation of uniform gravestones.

The gravestones will be manufactured and installed at the expense of the community. The appearance of the grave structures will be unified and approved by the city council, and their registration and further maintenance will be provided by the municipal ritual service.

It should be noted that the construction of a columbarium, a special structure for storing urns with ashes after cremation, has been completed at the Central City Cemetery of Mykolaiv. The facility is located on the territory of the cemetery in the Inhulskyi district at 1-k Avtomobilna Street, along the central pedestrian alley. The columbarium has 156 niches for urns.

In November 2024, an electronic Book of Remembrance was installed in Mykolaiv to honour those who died in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

We would also like to remind you that Mykolaiv plans to introduce discounted travel for the wives of defenders who gave their lives for Ukraine's independence. The relevant documents have already been prepared for consideration at a meeting of the city council's executive committee.
