The Ochakiv Multidisciplinary Hospital is short of doctors in various specialisms. The local communities whose residents receive treatment at this hospital are considering options for attracting doctors. These include funding their training or providing salary supplements from the budget.
This is stated in the minutes of a meeting of the commission developing a draft cooperation agreement between local authorities, according to NikVesti.
According to the minutes of the meeting, Deputy Mayor Oleksii Vaskov noted that, as a result of active hostilities, the Ochakiv Multidisciplinary Hospital has suffered significant losses in terms of its medical staff. The doctors currently lacking at the hospital were also named.
«As of today, we need an anaesthetist, a general practitioner, an orthopaedic surgeon and a surgeon. In the coming years, there will be a need for nursing staff, as well as an endocrinologist, a rehabilitation specialist and a physiotherapist. The situation is critical and may affect the quality of healthcare provision,» said Oleksii Vaskov.
He suggested that all local communities consider jointly funding a joint project to train medical staff for the Ochakiv hospital.
Although Nataliia Lavryk, head of the finance department at the Kutsurubsk Village Council, agreed that the issue of training medical staff is important, she doubted that the trained doctors would return specifically to Ochakiv. Furthermore, she noted that the community lacks funds, so it may not be able to find the money to pay doctors a supplement.
Andrii Dmytrenko, head of the Black Sea community, believed that medical staff should be offered market-rate salaries to encourage them to work at Ochakiv Hospital. Therefore, supplementary payments could be made from local budgets.
The hospital’s director, Valerii Knitel, noted that all medical staff at the hospital should receive high salaries. However, as staffing issues are not unique to Ochakiv Hospital, the salary level might not be sufficient to attract doctors.
Overall, the meeting tasked the hospital director with calculating how much money would be required for supplementary payments from the budgets. Meanwhile, the local authorities are to discuss the training of medical staff and the allocation of funds for supplementary payments.
In addition, the meeting discussed a proposal to co-fund the hospital’s utility and energy costs through contributions from the Ochakiv, Chornomorka and Kutsurub communities. It is proposed that the amount be calculated based on their respective shares of ownership in the hospital complex.
The next meeting is due to take place next week.
As a reminder, in 2025, NikVesti reported on life in the frontline town of Ochakiv. Among other things, the hospital highlighted a shortage of medical staff, specifically a surgeon and a cardiologist.
