Russia will not be returned to the «Group of Seven» (G7), as previously proposed by former US President Donald Trump.
This was stated by German Finance Minister Jörg Kukis in an interview with Reuters, noting that such an initiative would not be supported.
«The G7 condemnation of Russia's aggressive war is very clear, especially on the third anniversary of Russia's brutal attack», he said.
On 25 February, Jörg Kukis will travel to Cape Town for the G20 Finance Ministers' meeting to discuss the state of the global economy. He expressed his belief that a trade war between the US and the EU can be avoided, as no one is interested in starting a trade war.
Jörg Kukis also said that the G7 countries might consider using $300 billion of Russian assets frozen in Europe to help rebuild Ukraine. However, according to him, this issue is still at the initial stage of discussion.
As a reminder, Russia was expelled from the G7 (then the G8) in 2014 after the annexation of Crimea and the start of the war in eastern Ukraine. During his first presidential term, Donald Trump repeatedly tried to bring Russia back into the community, but this initiative was rejected, in particular by European countries.
Earlier, the United States opposed the fact that the joint statement of the G7 leaders, timed to coincide with the third anniversary of the full-scale war, directly called Russia the aggressor.
