German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Kyiv, where he will meet with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This visit to the Ukrainian capital will be his first in more than two years.
Spiegel writes about this with reference to the dpa agency, which quotes Olaf Scholz.
It should be noted that he promised during the visit to announce the provision of new military aid to Ukraine in the amount of 650 million euros, which should be delivered in December.
According to the German Chancellor, with his visit he wants to express his solidarity with Ukraine and show that Germany «will remain the strongest supporter of Ukraine in Europe»: «We say what we do. And we do what we say.»
Journalists assume that Olaf Scholz's conversation with Volodymyr Zelenskyy will probably also refer to possible negotiations with Russia to end the war, which the newly elected US President Donald Trump seeks to initiate.
Spiegel also writes that the chancellor can use this trip for pre-election purposes, because in two weeks he will ask the parliament for a vote of confidence. And in the elections, which will probably take place at the end of February, Olaf Scholz will seek re-election.
It should be noted that recently German Chancellor Olaf Scholz once again opposed the transfer of Taurus long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine. He also criticized the leader of the Christian Democratic Union, Friedrich Merz, who does not rule out the possibility of supplying these missiles if he leads the German government.
We will remind, on November 15, Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz and President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin planned to hold the first telephone conversation.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz believes that the call to Russian President Vladimir Putin was the right decision. According to him, the conversation was necessary to dispel the likely illusions of the President of the Russian Federation that the West can refuse to support Ukraine. The chancellor also says that he wanted to know whether Vladimir Putin's position regarding the war against Ukraine has changed.
