The Mykolaiv region supplies 10 times more electricity to Ukraine’s power grid than it consumes. Photo: NikVesti archiveThe Mykolaiv region currently generates around 4 GW of electricity, whilst the region’s own consumption stands at approximately 300 MW. Consequently, the region supplies around 10 times more to Ukraine’s power grid than it uses.
This was reported by Vitalii Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, in an interview with «Interfax-Ukraine».
According to him, the bulk of generation comes from nuclear power (approximately 3 GW), as well as solar and wind power stations. He also noted that there are around 3,400 generators in the region with a capacity of between 1 and 1.5 MW, some of which are on standby.
Vitalii Kim also spoke about the development of renewable energy in the region. In particular, during the full-scale war, DTEK built wind farms in the region with a total capacity of 189 MW and continues to expand its projects. In the future, their total capacity is set to rise to 500 MW.
«We have 3,400 powerful generators, rated at 1.2, 1.5 and 1 MW. We have these in reserve as well. DTEK has already built 189 MW of wind power stations during the war and is completing a further 500 MW. In total, we generate 4 GW of capacity, three of which come from the nuclear power station, plus solar and wind energy. We use around 300 MW, meaning we supply Ukraine with 10 times more than we use,» said Vitalii Kim.
He also emphasised that over 90 boiler houses are already operational in the region, and last year the state funded a further 18 major facilities. In his view, this enables the region to better prepare for the heating season, even in the face of risks to the infrastructure.
«58% of our region does not use gas for heating; centralised heating is available only in the cities of Mykolaiv and Pivdennoukrainsk. But there is a nuclear power station there, and the city is small – with a population of 40,000 – so there will be no problem. We have backed up our existing CHP plant by installing an extensive network of modular boilers. In general, this story began a long time ago; we have built more than 90 boiler houses, and last year the state funded a further 18 large ones. It’s not that we’re particularly clever — we were forced to diversify all the systems. When the CHP plant was hit and 100,000 people were without heating for two days, everyone immediately realised that something had to be done, and they did it last year. That is why I am more or less calm about the heating season, as we got started two years early. Consequently, we will be better protected, let’s say, next season,» said Vitalii Kim.
It should be noted that in recent days, the Russians have been shelling Mykolaiv and the region, specifically targeting energy facilities. As a result, power cuts have been reported in various parts of the city and the region.
According to the head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration and the mayor of Mykolaiv, energy workers are working flat out to restore power.
